My Thoughts

How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie has been around for so long! It was originally written in the 30’s but the points in it are timeless. Thus, it has been revised and updated throughout the years.

I had heard about it a long time ago but I kind of always assumed it would be a weird book about how to manipulate people, or fake your way into networking relationships, but I was wrong. It’s full of tips and anecdotes about how to be a more calm, enjoyable person to be around. And I think I picked it up at just the right time in my life.

Since reading it, when interviewing, meeting new people, or when I started a new job I think back to this book and the stories in it and remember to listen more than I talk, as well as smiling more and looking for ways to help others. It’s definitely a wonderful tool for self-improvement.

Even if you’re not looking for friends or ways to improve yourself I’d still recommend it to you – this book is full of useful information about the human psyche and I genuinely believe that EVERYONE could benefit from reading How to Win Friends and Influence People.

Favorite Quotes From The Book:

“When dealing with people, let us remember we are not dealing with creatures of logic. We are dealing with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudices and motivated by pride and vanity.”

“Instead of condemning people, let’s try to understand them. Let’s try to figure out why they do what they do. That’s a lot more profitable and intriguing than criticism; and it breeds sympathy, tolerance and kindness. “To know all is to forgive all.”

“John Wanamaker, founder of the stores that bear his name, once confessed: “I learned thirty years ago that it is foolish to scold. I have enough trouble overcoming my own limitations without fretting over the fact that God has not seen fit to distribute evenly the gift of intelligence.”

In Conclusion

I would give How To Win Friends and Influence People the rare 5 full stars. It was engaging, enjoyable, and extremely beneficial to my self improvement. I truly believe it should be required reading for everyone!
