Unf*ck Yourself’s Back-of-Book Description
New York Times bestseller. Over two million copies sold!
Joining the ranks of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, You Are a Badas*, and F*ck Feelings comes this refreshing, BS-free, self-empowerment guide that offers an honest, no-nonsense, tough-love approach to help you move past self-imposed limitations.
Are you tired of feeling fu*ked up? If you are, Gary John Bishop has the answer. In this straightforward handbook, he gives you the tools and advice you need to demolish the slag weighing you down and become the truly unfu*ked version of yourself. ”Wake up to the miracle you are,” he directs. ”Here’s what you’ve forgotten: You’re a fu*king miracle of being.” It isn’t other people that are standing in your way, it isn’t even your circumstances that are blocking your ability to thrive, it’s yourself and the negative self-talk you keep telling yourself.
In Unfu*k Yourself, Bishop leads you through a series of seven assertions:
- I am willing.
- I am wired to win.
- I got this.
- I embrace the uncertainty.
- I am not my thoughts; I am what I do.
- I am relentless.
- I expect nothing and accept everything.
Lead the life you were meant to have—Unfu*k Yourself.
My Thoughts
In a casual discussion of books and TV shows my boss happened to mention that he read this book. And like I did before with the last book my boss mentioned, I decided to read it!
Ok – I am fully aware that the title may be offputting for some people. Totally get it if cursing isn’t your jam. But for me… I liked the title. I appreciate a self-improvement/development book that doesn’t take itself too seriously. So for me, the vulgar, casual nature of it appealed to me.
Heads up – there are a few curse words in the body of the book as well. Personally, I didn’t think there were too many and I didn’t think they took away from the overall message, but that’s for you to decide, I suppose.
Anyways – Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and into Your Life was a fairly quick, easy read. it’s not very long at just over 200 pages, with wide margins. If you were motivated to, you could finish it in a day no problem. Or you could reflect on each chapter for a day or two and move through it at a more intentional pace.
Except for the intro and a conclusion, each chapter is a point from the back-of-book description – the seven assertions. It’s nice that he goes into detail about why they are important and offers a few anecdotes of how he chose them. The most important one to me and my life right now feels like “I am willing” because it’s a more direct, purposeful way of saying what you want to do.
And that is kind of his whole philosophy – to be direct and intentional with yourself and what you want out of life. To actually take action on what you are wanting for your life, rather than sitting and wishing that something would change.
I liked the writing style for the most part and I did mark a whole bunch of quotes!

Favorite Quotes From Unf*ck Yourself
“If you’re sometimes talking about how “unfair” life is, you’ll start to act according to that view, perceiving slights where none exist or, as studies have shown, putting less effort into your work because you’ve already determined it won’t accomplish anything. The unfair view will quickly become your reality.”
“We often view ourselves as procrastinators or lazy or unmotivated. When in reality, we’re simply unwilling.”
“When you start to view the world through the lens of what you’re willing and unwilling to pursue, rather than what it seems you want and don’t want, things start to become a lot clearer. “
“Your thoughts are so powerful that they are constantly pushing you toward your goals, even when you don’t realize what those goals actually are! Your brain is wired to win.”
“If we change our thinking a little, we can use our mind’s unconquerable nature to act on all the positive goals and dreams we hold for ourselves. We are wired to win – we just have to point ourselves in the right direction so we can win at something we consciously choose.”
“Uncertainty is your personal pathway to opportunity. It’s the environment in which you grow, experience new things, and produce new, unprecedented results.”
“Don’t be fooled by the self-help bullshit that tells you, “You deserve it!” because you don’t. No one Does. That conversation will leave you waiting and waiting and, eventually a complete victim to your own life. Sometimes you just have to grind it out, stake your claim, and hustle for what you want.”
“There aren’t any road signs when you’re trekking through uncharted territory, it’s all discovery and exploration.”
“…many of the difficulties and complications in your life are the direct result of expectations that you have or have had.”
“Your plan (and image) of how this should have gone is no longer relevant but yet you still struggle to reconcile the space between your expectations and reality.”
“Instead of silently expecting something and feeling slighted when it doesn’t happen, let go of that expectation.”
“Love the life you have, not the one you expected to have.”
“Your internal condition means nothing. It’s just another excuse that you give yourself to stay out of the risky zones of life. The problem is, those risky zones ARE life! The rest is just existing.”
In Conclusion
Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and into Your Life gets 4 stars from me. I liked it – I’m definitely going to apply some of the things he talked about, but It felt a little like it could have been either shorter or more substantial. Like it was too short for a book, but too long for an article, you know?
I would recommend this for anyone who wants a short self-improvement book with a casual, conversational style. I think it would also make a fun gift for people who are fans of swearing and need a little boost in their lives 🙂
